Anime in the big 2026

The Anime Page

And also the Manga Page

I expect this to be the second smallest part of the list. A lot of my favorite pieces of media are anime. However it's also a medium I fall in and out of love with pretty often. Animation is something I find to have infinite potential to be beautiful, and can do so many things that other mediums can't. However there's quite a large amount of anime I find to just be plain un-interesting to me these days. Thats not because anime that comes out now is worse than older anime, I don't really have an affinity for a specific time period of it. It's mostly just that I've gotten a lot older, and a lot of anime is aimed towards a younger audience, and the things that used to excite me just don't as much anymore. That's growing up for you! It's ok though, every once in a while the spark comes back around. I still love the medium, even if I mostly consume it through manga these days. Manga is my preference now mostly because it usually doesn't suffer from the same pacing issues that most anime has, among many other small things.

Here's a quick list of my favorite anime/manga.

  • Welcome to the N.H.K (2006, Anime)
  • Revolutionary Girl Utena (1997, Anime)
  • Jojo's Bizarre Adventure Part 7: Steel Ball Run (2004-2011, Manga)
  • One Piece (1997-?, Manga (really not the anime))
  • Mob Psycho 100 (2016, Anime)
  • Samurai Champloo (2005, Anime)
  • Haikyu!! (2014, Anime)
  • Attack on Titan Season 3: Part 2 (2019, Anime)
  • Gunbuster (1988, Anime)
  • Ping Pong: The Animation (2014, Anime)

Its a lot more Anime than Manga now that I write it all out... though most of these I watched before I stopped consuming anime as much. Doesn't make a big difference to me either way though- if I like it, I like it! Generally I think what I get enjoy most in Anime/Manga is the characters. I'm not sure if it's actually something the medium does better than other forms of entertainment, but for me personally anime and manga seem to be a lot more character focused than others. Maybe its just the episodic format, you get a lot more time with the characters than you would in a movie.

Much like movies I would like to move away from action anime/manga if possible. Almost all my favorite Anime/Manga I like for reasons that aren't the action sequences, but obviously they're very fun. My favorite anime of all time is Welcome to the N.H.K. I'd love to watch more stuff like that. It doesn't have to be about depression and mental health like that show is, but a similar kind of drama and character study is what I'm looking for.
